There are often fun things going on at Hellanback Ranch. John and Paula are both good cooks and great hosts! You don't have to ask twice to convince them to go on a cocktail hayride and tour of the ranch.

The 2009 RVVA Summer Social was a huge success, and bigger and better than last year's social. Over 100 people came to share wine and food this year. Once again, John cooked "famous" Hellanback beef burgers on the grill, with the help of several lovely assistants. There were many local wines there to be tasted.
This year we sponsored a wine contest. It was "reds only", one bottle per winery, amateur and professional competing side by side. Mario and Diana Bergeron created a special etched wine bottles as the first, second and third place "trophies". Paula also created the "coveted Hellanback Ranch Horseshoe Award" for each place!
Upcoming Events:John is conducting food and wine pairing dinners at Peter and Denise Clarke's beautiful home. The first of three planned five course dinners is scheduled for October 3, 2009, featuring chef Mike Thompson. All wines used at the dinners will be local wines, grown and produced in San Diego County. Two more pairings are planned for 2009, featuring two different chefs.
Most of the emphasis in 2009 was getting the new vineyards in good shape. Lots of pruning, training and weed control (also dispatching squirrels and rabbits - which seem to be around in Biblical numbers!). Of course, we are in the midst of the 2009 harvest.
